"FIT at FIVE"

High Quality Carbohydrates

Date:  August 22,2006

  Key Points:

  1. Carbohydrates are the healthiest foods nature makes in their more natural state:  Fruits, Vegetables, Whole Grains.
  2. Processed and refined is not natural and avoid Instants.
  3. Eat whole fruits/vegetables rather than drinking juices to get the fiber which will keep you full longer too.
  4. Select whole grain pastas, bagels, breads products, cereals.  Simple rule: Brown is usually better than white in any flour/grain product and grainy is best.
  5. Potatoes are a great carbohydrate but do not fry or cover in cheese, bacon, butter, and sour cream.
  6. Make baked goods with whole wheat baking flour, a heart healthy butter substitute like Smart Balance or vegetable oil, use 1/2 the sugar and/or try a sugar substitute made for baking.
  7. These high quality Carbohydrates will make and keep you energized and lean. Quality is key - including quality in their preparation.
