Key Points:
1. Three most
familiar Sugar Substitutes are:
(a) Saccharine - known as Sweet'N Low
(b) Aspartame - known as Equal, Nutrasweet
(c) Sucralose - known as Splenda
2.
All 3 have been approved by the FDA - Food and Drug Administration.
3. There as
been much discussion about these various sugar substitutes causing
cancer and other adverse health effects, but there is no supported
data to justify these claims and confirm these allegations in human
beings.
4.
The FDA approval indicates that these are safe when consumed in
moderation.
5.
Splenda (Sucralose) seems to be the preferred choice because it is
made from table sugar and it is the only one recommended for baking
and cooking.
6.
Sorbitol and Mannitol are sugars derived from alcohol, low in
calories, and used often in sugar free gum, candy, and breath mints.
Use moderately as these can produce a laxative and/or gaseous effect.
7. As with anything, listen to
your body. If you notice headaches or other discomforts after
ingesting sugar substitutes, eliminate and determine if discomfort is
relieved. Otherwise, enjoy sweets made from these products in
moderation.
