Make Walking a Part of Your Daily Routine

Date:  June 12, 2007

Walking Weather is here making it so simple to get out and do one of the best more enjoyable exercises to keep healthy, fit, and lean.  This week we'll focus on reasons to make walking a part of your daily routine:

1.  Burns Calories

2.  Strengthens muscles

3.   Reduces stress

4.  Easy on joints

5.  Strengthens bones

6.  Lowers blood pressure

7.  Reduces risk of health problems including heart disease and diabetes

8.  Helps to reduce cholesterol

9.  Helps to make you sleep better

10.  It is FREE!

The first step (pun intended) is defining an area, determining its distance and scheduling your walk time into your day.  Select from your neighborhood, a school track, or utilization of one of the many wonderful walking trails we have in the Youngstown area.  Mill Creek Park has 14 Trails accessible at various points between Boardman, Canfield, Austintown, and Youngstown; Boardman Park is great; Lowellville offers Stavich Trail, and Poland offers the Poland Woods Hike/Bike Trail.

Safety tip:  ALWAYS carry a small can of MACE or PEPPER SPRAY to protect yourself from not only a potential mugger but how about a mean animal.  Many serious injuries have resulted from not having a means of defense in the outdoors-don't go unprotected.  It is such a simple thing to attach to a key chain or put into a small pocket.  Enjoy the beautiful scenery, get walking, and enjoy.
