Two
weeks ago we talked about the benefits of walking and walking
weather is here. A few key accessories will make it so much
more enjoyable:

Shoes
that fit with the proper support are key. Visit a store with
a trained sales staff who know the right shoes to recommend for
various activities and how to fit a foot properly. Always get
measured and know your foot-a high arch requires a different
type of shoe compared to a flat foot for example. Communicate
with your sales person and get the right shoe for you. A
comfortable shoe will keep you walking providing the comfort and
protection for your ankles, legs, and feet.

Socks are important as they absorb perspiration and can provide
additional cushioning and support. When getting your shoes
fit, bring or purchase a good athletic sock as they will affect
the shoes' fit. The shoe and sock should work together.

I strongly
recommend keeping a small can of pepper spray or mace on you at
all times when outdoors to protect yourself from not only
muggers, but not so friendly dogs and animals that may come
upon you. We often go outdoors and don't think about a mean
animal approaching us, but it happens. Be prepared, safety is
so important to any fitness activity.

A headset is
a great accessory, but do not get so wrapped up in the music
or whatever you are listening to that you are not aware of the
elements around you-uneven pavement, traffic, and/or
animals. Keep the volume to a motivating but safe level.

Depending on
your pace and time, you may want a water bottle. If not
during, do have some water after your walk. Keeping
hydrated is important to good health.
Walking is so simple
and a great contributor to good health. Get outside and enjoy
walking smart in this great weather-a key step in becoming and
maintaining a lean and fit you.
