The Influence of Friends and Family on Your Health

Date:  August 7, 2007

You may have read about the recent New England Journal of Medicine's report on how friends influence your eating, exercise, healthy living lifestyle habits. The study shows that not only do their eating and exercise habits influence you but their acceptance of larger body sizes. The mindset spreads that it is "okay" to be bigger. The good news is the reverse holds true -- if you hang out with fitter people you are more likely to maintain healthier living habits.

  1. Be the leader in your social circle of friends and family by setting the example of healthier living.  DON'T BE THE FOLLOWER.

  2. Women seem to influence their female friends and family members much more so than the males around them such as husbands and brothers while the same holds true for men.  Men influence men and women influence women.

  3. Plan social time with friends and family that involves taking a walk and trying some low fat recipes together. Make it fun. Don't just sit around eating and drinking high fat fried greasy foods and snacks, MOVE!

  4. Get a low fat cookbook, have a friend over 2 over, and try some fun low fat recipes that look good.  Make it a social thing with some good music playing in the background.  Then think about taking a walk or exercise class together. You will be amazed how  fun  healthy living spreads. Remember, MAKE IT FUN and before you know it, those extra pounds will start melting away.
