Focus on Fats

Date:  September 25, 2007

Why do health conscious professionals continually preach about reducing the fats and eliminating the bad fats altogether in our diets?  Several reasons, the first being they lead to numerous health problems including elevated cholesterol, heart problems, diabetes, and obesity.  It is important to understand how fat calories compare to carbohydrate and protein calories.

  1. Gram of Fat equals 9 calories compared to a Gram of Protein or Gram of Carbohydrate that each equal 4 calories.

  2. Saturated Fats such as those that come from animals like  butter, bream and fat in, and on, meat stays hard at room temperature and causes the most health problems.  If it stays hard at room temp, it is doing the same in your body.

  3. Unsaturated Fats like olive oil, avocado, nuts, nut butters, flaxseed Oil and any vegetable oil are very nourishing to the body but consume in moderation; 3 to 4 tablespoons a day are usually adequate on average.

  4. Avoid Fried Foods as much as possible because their high concentration of greasy fat makes them extremely high in calories and fat grams as a result of the frying process.

  5. Watch Full Fat Dairy because the fat in these products is exactly what you get in full cream and butter-the heavy fat that rises to the top of fresh unpasteurized milk.

  6. Good Fats in Moderation are key to a healthy mind and body, but MODERATION is truly the key in this food group.
