There have
been several food recalls over the past several months starting with
spinach up to the latest Topps hamburger meat. How bad is it?
Overall, the food supply in America is safe, but nothing is totally
risk free. A few tips to reduce the low risk of getting tainted
foods:
-
Buy from reputable clean
stores.
-
Check expiration dates.
-
Do not buy packages that are
dented, broken, or old and dusty looking.
-
Keep refrigerated foods
refrigerated as soon as you get home.
-
Cook foods to their optimal
temperature to make sure fully cooked.
-
When handling raw
meats/poultry/fish-keep to a specific area and cutting board
that can be washed with anti bacterial detergent as soon as you
are done handling it. Clorox wipes are a great tool for this.
And don't forget to thoroughly wash your hands too before
touching other things and foods.
-
Wash fresh fruits and vegetables in water with baking soda or
vinegar. Don't assume anything pre-packaged does not need
washed, keep it safe and wash it accordingly.
-
If anything smells a bit odd, be it meat, fish, poultry,
vegetables, or rancid oils-DO NOT USE IT! Why even take the
risk, throw it out!
-
If an imported food, make sure you know country of origin, that
item is fresh, and has been handled properly since leaving its
country of origin such as maintaining refrigeration if
necessary.
If you do become ill with what
seems like food poisoning or unexplained nausea, fever, and/or
overall unexplained illness; contact your doctor immediately or go
to an emergency facility.
Be safe and smart when buying,
preparing, and storing foods.
