Have you noticed all the attention cupcakes
have been getting these days? They are the latest "in
food" with celebrities touting their favorites in cities throughout
the country. What is the catch? People
are becoming much more aware of portion control, especially with
sweets. The cupcake is perceived as a portion controlled sweet.
Instead of buying a whole cake that does not have a defined portion
slice with layers of frosting in the middle (the frosting usually is
the highest in bad fats and sugar), one can enjoy a small cupcake
and feel satisfied.
So bakeries are jumping on this craze
making a variety of unique flavors touting gourmet types.
The point I want to make as a result of this craze is portion
control of the foods we love but try to avoid. Apply it to your
daily diet. If you want a higher fat entree, eat a smaller
portion. If dining out, split the entree with one of your dining
partners instead of ordering two; if preparing it at home, do not
prepare an overabundance, make small portions for only the number of
people that will be dining. Make a smaller amount and present it
beautifully on a pretty plate with a little garnish to give the look
and feel of something special and beautiful. Make the focus
the beautiful presentation, not the quantity. And, always, have an
abundance of the healthier foods present to satisfy the appetite.
If serving cupcakes, also serve a fresh fruit platter. If serving a
rich entree, garnish it with lots of wonderful colorful
vegetables and start with a larger salad with a lighter
dressing. Make a little of something higher in fat and calories go
a long way!
