Halloween is
probably the least healthy holiday of the year because there is so
little good food to balance the sweets; it's all about candy, candy,
candy! But a little effort on your part can make the difference
between a really bad stomach ache and tons of extra empty calories
versus enjoying a little candy with some healthier foods.
-
After Trick or Treating, sort
through all of the treats collected and separate into 3 piles,
chocolates, non chocolate candy, and other snacks. Keep the
better choices out such as small bags of pretzels, dark
chocolates, and suckers.
-
Keep a moderate amount of the
candy bars in a small bowl and freeze the excess along with
freezing the extra candy you have left over from the treats you
were handing out.
-
Prepare some healthy food to
have ready as soon as Trick or Treating is over:
a. Keep a large bowl of
fresh fruits; apples, pears, bananas on the counter to balance
out that smaller candy bowl along with a large bowl of light
microwave popcorn.
b. Make some heart
healthy sandwiches on whole wheat bread or pita
bread using light turkey breast, lean ham, lowfat cheese, lettuce,
tomato, and some natural peanut butter and simply fruit jelly.
-
If you do not have some
healthier foods readily available, the kids get back from Trick
or Treating and everyone ends up eating way too many sweets,
preparation key!.
As always, be safe, carry
flashlight if dusk, keep off the sides of the roads preferring grass
or sidewalks, and always wear some brighter clothing to reflect off
car lights. Have a Happy Healthier Halloween.
