The holidays
are just around the corner and you would not believe the little tips
that can lighten up your holiday favorites without sacrificing
taste. A few tips to keep it heart healthier:
-
Holiday stuffing: begin by
doubling up on the chopped celery and onions and add chopped
carrots and zucchini too. This reduces the amount of bread
crumbs reducing calories while increasing vitamins, minerals,
and fiber. Next, simmer them in lowfat chicken broth eliminating
the butter saute. Add that mixture to your whole wheat bread
cubes or crumbs adding more broth as needed to moisten along
with your usual seasonings.
-
Skip the buttery crescent and
white flour roles opting for whole wheat options. There are
some great ones available in the freezer section of your local
grocery you can pop in the oven before meal time.
-
Use Smart Balance instead of
butter and replace half of the sugar (if not all) with Splenda
when cooking and baking.
-
Serve Smart Balance spray
instead of butter for bread and rolls.
-
Mashed potatoes are guilt free
if you use Yukon gold potatoes, lowfat chicken broth, butter
buds instead of butter, and a little warmed skim milk. Boil
the potatoes in lowfat chicken broth, drain keeping the liquid
on the side. Add the other ingredients to the boiled potatoes,
salt & pepper, and leftover broth as needed for consistency as
you whip together. I bet no one will know how heart healthy
they are because they taste so good!
-
Always spray casseroles dishes
with a non stick spray instead of rubbing with butter.
-
And don't waste calories and
load up on tons of sugar with soda pop-it is the worst. Try
Iced Tea with Splenda, sugar free flavored waters, homemade
lemonade with Splenda , or simply water with cucumber, lemon,
lime, or orange slices. So refreshing.
Have a happy
and healthy delicious holiday season.
